Shortlet vs. Annual Rent for a Service Year

Lagos annual rentals are almost always paid 1-2 years upfront, plus agent fees (commonly 10%) and a caution fee (a refundable damage deposit) on top — a real barrier when you're on an NYSC monthly allowance. A shortlet, by contrast, is priced nightly, weekly, or monthly with no massive upfront commitment, which is why it's the more realistic option for the first month or two while you settle into your PPA and decide whether to commit to an annual lease nearby.

What This Actually Costs

Budget studio and one-bedroom shortlets on the Lagos Mainland (areas like Yaba, Surulere, Gbagada, and Ikeja) tend to run cheaper than the high-end Lekki/Victoria Island market, which is the more realistic price band for a corper's budget. Expect a security/incidental deposit on top of the nightly or monthly rate — ask for this in writing before paying anything.

Choosing a Location Relative to Your PPA

  • Mainland areas (Yaba, Surulere, Gbagada, Ikeja): generally the most budget-realistic, well-connected by public transport, and close to most government/education PPAs.
  • Island areas (Lekki, VI): pricier, more realistic if your PPA is a corporate placement on the Island itself.
  • Proximity to your CDS group's meeting point matters too, since weekly CDS attendance is compulsory.

Red Flags Before You Pay

Corps members are a known target for shortlet scams precisely because you're often booking sight-unseen from another state right after camp. Never pay a deposit to someone who won't do a video call walkthrough of the actual unit, insists on payment only via DM with no formal booking record, or pressures you to pay "before someone else takes it." Book through a platform that keeps a verifiable booking record rather than a purely informal WhatsApp/Instagram arrangement.
