Pet-Friendly Vacation Rentals in Ocean City, MD: The Summer Beach Ban Explained
Ocean City runs the most straightforward — and strictest — seasonal dog policy of the Mid-Atlantic beach towns: dogs are banned from the beach and boardwalk entirely for five months, not just during certain hours.
The Rule
From May 1 through September 30, dogs are not allowed on the beach or boardwalk in Ocean City, at any hour, on or off leash. The ban lifts October 1, and from October 1 through April 30 dogs are welcome on a leash, with owners required to clean up after them. Reported leash-length rules vary by source (one gives 8 feet; nearby Delmarva towns commonly use 6 feet) — check current town code before relying on a specific number.
Unlike towns such as Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head that restrict only midday hours in summer, Ocean City's ban is total during peak season. A July trip genuinely means no beach time with your dog anywhere in town.
Where Dogs Can Still Go in Summer
The Dog Playground at 94th Street
This bayside dog park stays open all year, including through the summer beach ban. It has an open play area, agility equipment, and a dog pool — a real substitute for beach time during the restricted months. Check the town's site for rates and registration.
Assateague National Seashore
Just south of Ocean City, leashed dogs are allowed on the Assateague National Seashore beach year-round — including summer. Note this applies to the National Seashore specifically, not Assateague State Park, where dogs are not allowed on the beach.
Booking Around the Ban
If your trip falls between May and September, don't book an Ocean City rental expecting beach time with your dog — plan around the 94th Street dog park and a side trip to Assateague National Seashore instead, or shift the trip to the October–April window when the beach itself opens back up.
Rental pet fees and weight limits are set individually by hosts, as with most coastal markets — confirm directly, and double-check if the building is a condo, since HOA pet rules sometimes add further restrictions.
