Pet-Friendly Vacation Rentals in St. Augustine, FL: Which Beaches Actually Allow Dogs

St. Augustine and St. Johns County have a reputation as one of the more dog-welcoming corners of Florida, and for the most part that holds up — almost every county beach allows leashed dogs. There's one major exception worth knowing before you book.

Anastasia State Park: Not a Dog Beach

Despite being the most scenic and most searched beach near St. Augustine, Anastasia State Park does not allow dogs on the sand or inside any park buildings — it's managed partly as a protected bird sanctuary. Leashed dogs (6 feet or shorter) are allowed on the park's trails, just not the beach itself. If your trip is built around a beach day with your dog, this isn't the park to plan around.

Where Dogs Are Actually Welcome

St. Augustine Beach

Dogs are generally allowed on a leash along St. Augustine Beach, making it one of the most reliable dog-friendly options directly in town.

Crescent Beach

Also dog-friendly with a leash, though vehicles and horses sometimes share the beach here — something to be aware of if your dog is reactive to either.

The St. Johns County Pier

Dogs are not allowed on the pier itself, and pier hours shift seasonally — 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM from May through October during sea turtle nesting season.

Picking a Rental

Because the beach-friendly areas are spread along St. Johns County rather than concentrated in one zone, where you stay affects how far you're driving for each beach trip. A rental closer to St. Augustine Beach or Crescent Beach puts you within a short drive of dog-friendly sand; a rental positioned to look at Anastasia's views won't actually get you beach access with your dog.

As with most Florida coastal markets, pet fees and weight limits are set by the individual host or property manager rather than a county-wide rule — confirm directly before booking, especially for condo units that may have HOA pet restrictions layered on top of the owner's own policy.

Sea Turtle Season Note

May through October is sea turtle nesting season along this stretch of coast. Some beach accesses add extra restrictions or close sections during this window — check current signage or the county's beach page if your trip falls in these months.
